Thorney How Independent Hostel in Grasmere had historically used oil and electric for its hot water and heating supply, but when faced with heating issues and restricted scope to change the insulation, there was only one solution for them.

The Challenge

Offering accommodation for 50 guests in a 350 year old former farmhouse, Thorney How is set in the beautiful Lake District hills and was struggling to meet the heating demand, especially in the winter months, through its existing supply.

What We Did

Being in such a rural location, greener fuel options were already a high priority and so Thorney How approached AvantiGas to install a biomass system as part of a broader program of improvements to the hostel’s buildings.

Opting for the on-site model solution, AvantiGas replaced the oil and electric with a 100kW biomass boiler to bring the heating costs down and provide a reliable source of heating and hot water.

The Results

Taylor Nuttall, owner of Thorney How commented: “As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability, the installation of biomass has very much been at the core of our development plans. AvantiGas have been an enormous help in identifying the best solution for a rambling Grade 2 listed property with accommodation split over two buildings and the requirements of the walkers and groups that stay with us. Installation work has so far been faultless with considerate and communicative staff.”
